Willow Road looks different than it did a year ago. Dundee has two new ribbon-cuttings behind it. Village Green Park has a concert scheduled almost every week from late June through August. And the site everyone still calls "the mall" is going to spend most of 2026 pouring foundations for apartments rather than opening stores. If you already live here, the practical question is simple: what actually opened, what's back on the calendar, and where should Wednesday night land this week.
The center of gravity moved off Lake Cook Road
For two decades, when someone said "let's meet in Northbrook," they meant Northbrook Court. That's shifting on purpose. Brookfield Properties, which has owned the 100-acre site at 1515 Lake Cook Road since 1995, won approval in early 2026 to start construction with the residential phase of the redevelopment rather than the retail refresh that was originally teed up in 2023. The first buildings going up will be apartments, row houses, and townhomes, and the sales-tax and TIF incentives the village agreed to only switch on once retail construction is actually underway.
Translation for residents: the interior mall is not getting a facelift this year. Neiman Marcus, Chanel, White House Black Market, The Lego Store, and Chico's are still open, but foot-traffic energy is migrating a mile in either direction, to the Willow Road corridor and to downtown Northbrook around Shermer and Cedar. That is where nearly everything new sits.
Where to eat that wasn't here a year ago
Four names worth knowing, all within a short drive of each other:

A few things stand out when you line them up. Three of the four sit on Willow or Dundee rather than downtown, which is a real change from the direction openings were trending five years ago. Just Salad is not a one-off; the Northbrook store is the chain's tenth in Illinois, joining six in Chicago and the Edens Plaza location in Wilmette, so the neighborhood is now part of an anchored North Shore rotation instead of an outlier. Bombay Bowl is the opposite pattern, a single-family operator who chose Northbrook first, which is the kind of vote of confidence a resident notices more than a national rollout.
Lazy Dog is the one to watch. The Granite City building has been dark for more than six years, and the temporary hiring center at the Sheraton Chicago Northbrook Hotel at 1110 Willow Road ran interviews Monday through Saturday to staff up 150 positions. That is not a soft opening. That is a full-service restaurant of scale returning to a stretch of Willow that had been coasting on quick-service.
Wednesdays at Village Green, and the concerts that orbit them
The single most useful date to keep in your head this summer runs Wednesday afternoon into evening. The Northbrook Farmers Market runs at Village Green Park every Wednesday from June 17 through October 14, 2026. From there, the park's programming stacks on top of itself through the week:
- Free evening concerts at Village Green Park. The July lineup includes Todd Downing's Tall Tales & Silly Songs with Beyond the Blonde on July 14 at 6:30 p.m., Mary Macaroni with Porcupine Avalanche on July 21, and Mike Mauthe with The Yacht Rockettes on July 28, and Little Miss Ann with Classical Blast on August 4. All free.
- Flamingo Fridays. Every Friday evening between Memorial Day and Labor Day, any resident can host a flamingo party in their neighborhood as a low-lift way for new and long-time neighbors to meet each other. It reads gimmicky on paper and works in practice.
- Grapes on the Green. The third annual wine-tasting evening at Village Green Park with live music from The Flat Cats, art, games, light snacks, and BYO picnic dinners. Bring a blanket.
- Bike the Green. A free evening at Village Green Park on July 23 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
If you are new to the block and trying to meet neighbors without joining a committee, Wednesday market plus one Friday concert is the shortest path.
The August week that still runs the town
Since 1950, the Northbrook Days festival has raised close to $4 million for the community.
That number is worth sitting with. Northbrook Days is a 100% volunteer operation under the Northbrook Civic Foundation, the foundation's sole fundraiser of the year, and the money funds need-based college scholarships for local students and grants for organizations that serve residents. The 2026 festival runs August 5 through August 9 in downtown Northbrook, with music each night including Out of Control and Justine Ewald on Aug 5, Disco Circus and King Saturday on Aug 6, Mr. Blotto and Dan Peters Band on Aug 7, Pino Farina Band, Harry Reinhart, and Pan Chicago on Aug 8, and Deadfast with Probable Cause on Aug 9.
If your kids have aged into the "drop them at the festival for two hours" phase, this is the week. If they haven't, the daytime rides open early and the crowds are gentler before dinner.
Sports and September, so you're not scrambling later
Two more anchors to write into the calendar before summer disappears:
Criterium racing downtown. The village hosts a stop on the Chicago Grit series with amateur and elite cyclists taking tight corners through downtown Northbrook, spectator-friendly and running throughout the day. It pairs naturally with the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, Northbrook's quarter-mile outdoor bike track that hosts weekly summer races and Friday amateur nights for riders of all ages. Bring a folding chair; the corners near the turnaround are the best viewing.
Brewfest, if beer is your thing. The 6th Annual Northbrook Brewfest returns September 19, 2026, and the format is tastings from 15 breweries with lagers, stouts, IPAs, ciders, hard seltzers, and non-alcoholic beer, plus food and entertainment, for ages 21 and up, presented by the Northbrook Park District and the Village.
Reading the season
Two threads tie all of this together. The first is that Northbrook's community life is running through Village Green Park and its immediate downtown much more heavily than it used to, and that is not an accident. The park sits at the heart of downtown, houses an old-fashioned gazebo, playground, and picnic areas, and is the home of Little League Baseball, Park Fest concerts, Northbrook Days, and the Fourth of July celebration. When the mall's retail refresh got pushed, downtown didn't shrink to compensate; it programmed harder.
The second thread is the food story on Willow. Four openings in a twelve-month window along one road is a real cluster, and Lazy Dog's arrival in a vacant six-year building is the signal that landlords along that corridor have gotten serious about turning storefronts over rather than leaving them dark. For anyone who bought a house nearby with the assumption that dining meant driving to Glenview or Deerfield, the map has genuinely changed.
The rest is a matter of picking your Wednesday.
